How to Get to Bhutan: Flights & Land Borders

Most travellers reach Bhutan by flying into Paro, the country’s only international airport, on Drukair or Bhutan Airlines. Direct flights connect Paro with Bangkok, Delhi, Kathmandu, Kolkata, Singapore (via Guwahati), Dhaka, Bagdogra and Guwahati. Booking your flights

Airlines need your Bhutan visa clearance before they confirm a ticket, so we book flights and visa together.
Seats sell out early in spring and autumn, especially around the Paro and Thimphu festivals. Book two to three months ahead, or six months for festival dates.
International flights are not included in our tour price.

The flight into Paro

The approach to Paro is one of the most spectacular in the world, through a narrow Himalayan valley. On a clear day, flights from Kathmandu and Delhi pass close to the great Himalayan peaks, including Everest and Kanchenjunga. Only specially trained pilots are certified to land at Paro.

Entering Bhutan by road

Phuentsholing, on the border with West Bengal: about 170 km from Bagdogra airport, then about six hours by road to Thimphu.
Samdrup Jongkhar, on the border with Assam: about three hours by road from Guwahati, and open to international tourists since November 2024. It is a good start for an East-to-West journey across Bhutan.

If you travel through India by road, check that your Indian visa allows entry and exit by land.

Drukair runs domestic flights from Paro to Bumthang and Gelephu. They save long drives on central and southern routes, and we can add them to your itinerary.

Can I drive into Bhutan?
